3-day itinerary

Barcelona

La Boqueria is a fine market if you arrive at 7am — by 10am it is largely a row of overpriced smoothie bars for tourists. If you want a real covered market, walk up to Mercat de l'Abaceria in Gràcia instead. This 3-day Barcelona itinerary books the Sagrada Família first entry slot at 8am, when the morning light comes through the Nativity facade stained glass and the crowds are thin; by 10am the nave is a scrum. Barceloneta beach is worth doing, but go in the morning or late afternoon — midday in summer is genuinely unpleasant. The Gràcia neighbourhood above Park Güell is where Barcelona lives; eat dinner there rather than fighting for a table in the Gothic Quarter.

Day 1

Gothic Quarter and Barceloneta

The Gothic Quarter is best explored in the morning before tour groups fill the narrow streets. Barceloneta beach is the afternoon's destination — a 15-minute walk from the old city.

Gothic Quarter (Barri Gòtic)

Established

The medieval heart of Barcelona — two millennia of history compressed into a few walkable kilometres. The Roman walls, the cathedral, and the Pont del Bisbe bridge are the anchors. Get lost deliberately and surface somewhere unexpected.

Barcelona Cathedral

Established

The Gothic cathedral at the heart of the Barri Gòtic, built between the 13th and 15th centuries. The cloister with its 13 white geese (one for each year of Saint Eulàlia's martyrdom) is the most memorable part. Free in the morning before noon.

El Born neighbourhood

Established

The neighbourhood between the Gothic Quarter and Barceloneta that has become Barcelona's most creative quarter. The Mercat de Santa Caterina (the colourful-roofed market) and the Basílica de Santa Maria del Mar are both worth stopping for.

Barceloneta beach

Established

The city beach — 1.1 kilometres of sand 15 minutes from the Gothic Quarter. Go in the afternoon for the light. The beach bars (chiringuitos) serve acceptable mojitos and the view of the W Hotel tower from the water is a postcard.

Bar Marsella

Explorer

Barcelona's oldest bar, open since 1820 in the El Raval neighbourhood. Dusty bottles, peeling mirrors, and absinthe served the traditional way with sugar and water. Cash only. More atmosphere than any bar in the city.

El Xampanyet

Established

A classic cava bar in El Born, trading since 1929. Order the house cava and whatever tapas are on the counter. Gets crowded and loud — that's the point. Arrive at opening (7pm) for a spot at the bar.
