3-day itinerary

Kyoto

Fushimi Inari is crowded by 9am and genuinely quiet before 7 — the difference is not subtle. The same logic applies everywhere in this 3-day Kyoto itinerary: the Arashiyama bamboo grove at 8am versus 11am are two different places. This plan covers Fushimi Inari and the Gion geisha quarter (walk Hanamikōji in the early evening, not at midday, when geiko are heading to engagements), Arashiyama and the 14th-century Tenryu-ji Zen garden, and a third day at the Golden Pavilion and the Philosopher's Path canal walk. Get an ICOCA card at the station when you arrive — it works on every bus and train in the city. Book restaurants weeks ahead; the best counters fill up fast.

Day 1

Fushimi Inari and Gion

Fushimi Inari's famous vermilion torii gate tunnel is best before 7am — by 9am it's busy, by 11am it's crowded. The upper mountain trails above the tourist section are always quieter.

Fushimi Inari-taisha Shrine

Established

The Shinto shrine on Mount Inari with thousands of vermilion torii gates forming continuous tunnels up the mountain. Arrive before 7am for the first light through the gates and almost no other visitors. The full summit trail takes 2-3 hours. Even just the lower section is extraordinary.

Nishiki Market

Established

Kyoto's 'kitchen' — a narrow covered market street with 400 years of history, selling pickles, fresh tofu, skewered seafood, and tea. Five blocks long; best walked mid-afternoon when the food stalls are fully staffed. Try the dashi-maki tamago (rolled omelette) and the pickled vegetables.

Gion district

Established

Kyoto's geisha quarter — machiya (wooden merchant houses) and ochaya (tea houses) preserved along Hanamikōji street. Walk slowly; geiko (Kyoto geisha) and maiko (apprentices) are occasionally visible in the early evening on their way to engagements. Respectful photography from a distance only.

Pontocho alley

Established

The narrow lane running parallel to the Kamo River — machiya restaurants serving kaiseki (Japanese tasting menu) and izakaya food side by side. Tables on wooden platforms over the river in summer (kawayuka). Walk the lane and choose somewhere that appeals.
