5-day itinerary
Kyoto
Most visitors to Kyoto turn back at the lower gates of Fushimi Inari — the upper mountain trail is almost always quiet and the view from the summit over the city is worth the hour it takes to climb. That's the starting point for this 5-day Kyoto itinerary: knowing where the crowds are and routing around them. The plan covers the bamboo grove in Arashiyama (before 8am, not after), a full day in Nara — 45 minutes by Kintetsu express, deer in the park, the enormous Tōdai-ji bronze Buddha — and a half-day in Uji, 20 minutes south, where the Byodo-in temple sits in its mirror pond and the matcha shops on the main street are genuinely exceptional. Day 1
Fushimi Inari and Gion
Arrive at Fushimi Inari before 7am. The torii tunnel in early morning light with no other visitors is one of the finest experiences in Japan. Walk up to the upper mountain for the view — most tourists turn back at the lower gates.
Fushimi Inari-taisha Shrine
EstablishedThousands of vermilion torii gates up Mount Inari. Before 7am is ideal. The full summit trail takes 2-3 hours; the upper sections are always quiet.

View on mapGion district (Hanamikōji)
EstablishedThe geisha quarter — walk Hanamikōji slowly in the late afternoon. Geiko and maiko are occasionally visible on their way to engagements. Respectful distance only.
Explore areaPontocho alley
EstablishedThe narrow riverside lane with machiya restaurants and izakayas. Kawayuka (river platforms) in summer. Walk the lane and choose where to eat.
