3-day itinerary
Rome
The restaurants around Piazza Navona exist almost entirely for tourists — the food is mediocre and the prices are not. Walk fifteen minutes west across the Tiber to Trastevere and eat at Da Enzo al 29 instead; arrive at 7pm, no reservations, and join the queue. This 3-day Rome itinerary starts at the Colosseum at opening time — book timed-entry online or lose two hours to the queue — then spends day two at the Vatican, where advance booking is not optional in peak season. The Borghese Gallery on day three requires its own reservation weeks ahead: 110 visitors per two-hour slot, no exceptions, and the Bernini sculptures inside are among the greatest things in Rome.
Day 1
The ancient city — Colosseum, Forum, Palatine
Book the Colosseum + Roman Forum + Palatine Hill combo ticket online before you arrive. It's one ticket for all three sites. Go early — by 10am the Colosseum floor is packed.
Colosseum
EstablishedThe 2,000-year-old amphitheatre where gladiatorial combat, wild animal hunts, and naval battles were staged for 80,000 spectators. Buy timed-entry tickets online — without them you'll queue for two to three hours. The Arena floor access adds context.
View on mapRoman Forum
EstablishedThe political and commercial heart of ancient Rome, stretching from the Colosseum toward Capitoline Hill. Walk through slowly — the scale becomes clear when you realise the ruins are only 30% of what stood here.
View on mapPalatine Hill
EstablishedThe hill where Rome's emperors lived — included with the Forum-Colosseum ticket. The ruins of the imperial palaces are atmospheric and much less crowded than the Forum below. The garden has the best view of the Circus Maximus.
View on mapCircus Maximus
EstablishedThe ancient chariot-racing stadium that once held 250,000 spectators — now a grassy park. Walk its length to understand the scale. The view from Palatine Hill above is better than standing inside it.
View on mapTrastevere neighbourhood
EstablishedThe neighbourhood across the Tiber that Rome's locals claim as the real Rome. The medieval lanes come alive at dinner time. Start at Piazza di Santa Maria in Trastevere — the mosaic facade of the basilica is lit beautifully at night.
Explore areaDa Enzo al 29
EstablishedA classic Roman trattoria in Trastevere with a short menu of Roman classics — cacio e pepe, coda alla vaccinara, artichokes. No reservations; arrive at 7pm and join the queue outside. Worth the wait.
