3-day itinerary
Santorini
Oia at midday is genuinely unpleasant — the light is flat, the lanes are packed, and the café queues stretch into the street. Go at 7am, or after 7pm when the day-tripper boats have left and the village is almost quiet again. This 3-day Santorini itinerary opens with the 10km caldera walk from Fira to Oia in the morning cool, saves Akrotiri for day two — one of the best-preserved Bronze Age cities in Europe, buried by the 1627 BC eruption, and significantly less visited than it deserves — and finishes with the caldera boat tour and a proper Assyrtiko tasting at Domaine Sigalas or Estate Argyros. The wine here is not tourist wine; it's genuinely exceptional.
Day 1
Fira and the caldera walk
Walk from Fira to Oia along the caldera path (10km, 3-4 hours) in the morning while it's cool. The view of the caldera from the path is better than from any viewpoint or terrace. Finish in Oia for lunch and the afternoon.
Fira to Oia caldera walk
ExplorerThe 10km trail along the rim of the caldera — the full walk takes 3-4 hours and passes through Firostefani and Imerovigli before arriving in Oia. The best views of the caldera, the volcano, and the Aegean are from the path rather than any terrace. Start in Fira at 7am before the heat.

View on mapOia village
EstablishedThe iconic village at the northern tip of the island — blue-domed churches, white cubic houses, and the famous caldera view. The village is most beautiful in the early morning or evening; the afternoon brings the cruise ship crowd. Walk the main lane and the steps down to Ammoudi Bay.
Explore areaAmmoudi Bay
ExplorerThe tiny fishing port 300 steps below Oia — the freshest seafood on the island, eaten at tables above the water. The octopus drying on lines is the image of the Greek islands. Swimming off the volcanic rocks in the bay is excellent.

View on mapOia sunset
EstablishedThe famous Oia sunset — the sun setting behind the caldera rim while the white buildings turn pink and gold. Every evening from spring to autumn. The cliff of Oia fills up an hour before sunset; find a spot early or accept the crowd as part of the experience.
